Dental Treatment: Home or Away?

Dental Treatment: Home or Away?

More of us than ever are investing in our smiles. According to the governmental Competition and Markets Authority, one in five people in Great Britain used private dental care in 2024 – and demand for cosmetic treatments in particular is growing rapidly. From implants to veneers to whitening or a full smile makeover, the desire to look and feel confident in our teeth is entirely understandable.

But as that demand has risen, so too has the temptation to look beyond the UK for treatment – drawn by the promise of lower prices, shorter waits and the appeal of combining a procedure with a trip abroad. Before you book, though, it’s worth understanding what you might be trading away.

Why do people go abroad for dental treatment?

Cost is the obvious driver. Dental treatment in countries such as Turkey, Hungary and Poland can appear significantly cheaper than equivalent private care in the UK. For complex work – implants, veneers, full smile makeovers – the savings can look substantial, especially when a flight and a few nights’ accommodation are bundled in. It feels like a win-win.

And it’s not always a bad experience. Some clinics abroad do excellent work. But ‘some’ and ‘always’ are very different things when it comes to your health – and the data tells a sobering story.

What do the numbers actually tell us?

The British Dental Association surveyed UK dentists about patients who had sought treatment overseas. The findings are striking: 95% of dentists had examined a patient who had been treated abroad, and of those, 86% had needed to treat complications on their return. Crowns and implants were the procedures most likely to need remedial work.

The cost of fixing those complications? Two-thirds of dentists said it set patients back at least £500. More than half said over £1,000. One in five reported costs exceeding £5,000 – often more than the original treatment would have cost in the UK.

Suddenly, the bargain looks rather different.

Why does UK dentistry protect you differently?

Here in the UK, every dentist must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). The GDC sets rigorous standards for education, clinical practice and professional conduct, and any dentist who falls short can be investigated, suspended or struck off. Dental practices are also inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which checks that care is safe, effective and well-led.

When you choose a UK practice, you’re choosing:

  • Dentists who are qualified, registered and accountable
  • Standardised infection control and clinical safety protocols
  • A clear, accessible complaints process if something isn’t right
  • Ongoing professional development – your dentist doesn’t just qualify once and stop
  • Legal protections and routes to compensation if treatment falls short

Abroad, these protections are far from guaranteed. Regulatory requirements vary enormously by country, and it can be very difficult to verify a clinic’s credentials, hygiene standards or complaints procedures – especially from a distance, and often through a language barrier.

What’s the problem with rushed treatment?

One of the less-discussed risks of dental tourism is the pace of treatment. To fit around travel schedules, overseas clinics often compress complex procedures into just a few days. Work that would typically be spread over several weeks in the UK – think healing, precision fitting and assessment – can be squeezed into a single trip.

The result? At the least you could have a mouth with poorly fitted fillings, rushed crown placements or veneers applied after excessive tooth reduction. And when you’re back home, there’s no continuation of service or follow-up care that’s so essential.
