Teeth whitening is a popular dental treatment. It used to be considered a bit of a luxury, but is now much more widespread. In fact, as many as 4 in 10 people under 35 in the UK have had tooth whitening, according to the Oral Health Foundation. So how safe is it as a procedure and what are the actual benefits to teeth whitening?

There are so many different options available for teeth whitening, both at home treatments, at your dentist and going overseas. To be absolutely certain that your teeth remain protected and safe, we would ALWAYS recommend you have the treatment done by your dentist – this may be in surgery or an at home treatment, but when you take professional advice, you will be safeguarding the health of your teeth and mouth.

The benefits of teeth whitening

You may think the benefits of teeth whitening are all cosmetic, but there are oral health benefits too:

  • Enhanced appearance: a brighter, whiter smile can significantly improve your overall appearance, boosting your confidence and self-esteem.
  • Anti-ageing look: whiter teeth can make you look younger by reducing discolouring and staining.
  • Removes stains: professional teeth whitening removes surface stains caused by food, drinks and other factors (including smoking), revealing a fresher, brighter look.
  • Improved confidence: a brighter smile can boost your confidence and make you feel more comfortable in social situations.
    1. More attractive smile: your smile is unique to you and making it brighter will make you naturally want to smile more. And smiles are contagious so you’ll quickly be infecting everyone you meet!
  • Quick and long-lasting results: professional teeth whitening treatments are quick (sometimes just 60 minutes!) and last much longer than those achieved with home whitening kits. They penetrate deeper into your teeth’s surface and are much safer than DIY kits – and meet legal guidelines too.
  1. Encourages better oral hygiene and health: whitening treatments can encourage better oral hygiene, leading to a healthier mouth overall. When you’ve got a brighter smile, you’re more likely to maintain it through regular brushing, flossing and dental check-ups.
  2. May prevent future discoloration: teeth whitening can help prevent new stains from developing on the teeth by removing surface stains and encouraging improved oral hygiene.
  3. Protects against fillings and gum disease: a brighter smile may give you more reasons to keep your mouth healthy, which lessens the probability of developing oral health issues.

How can we help with teeth whitening?

At Holland Park Dental Centre, we offer in surgery and at home teeth whitening treatments. We use the Enlighten Teeth Whitening system for at home treatments (a gel worn at night). This is the only system guaranteed to provide a B1 shade, which is the most popular and brightest and natural of all tooth colours. If you would prefer an in-surgery treatment, we have the Philips ZOOM laser system which can lighten your teeth by 7 shades in as little as 60 minutes. That could be quite a transformative lunch break!
