Protecting Your Smile This Festive Season: Our Top Tooth Tips
The festive season is a time for celebration, indulgence and joy – and that often means an increase in sweet treats, chocolate, and alcohol. While we wouldn’t want to suggest you skip the mince pies or the glass of bubbly, it’s worth remembering that your teeth might not enjoy the festivities quite as much as you do! With a few simple habits, you – and your teeth – can enjoy Christmas to the fullest while keeping your smile healthy and bright.

The Sweet Side of Christmas
Christmas and sweets go hand in hand – from advent calendar chocolates to festive puddings and tins of heroic and celebratory sweets (you know the ones we mean). Unfortunately, all that sugar provides the perfect food for bacteria in your mouth, which then produce acids that attack your tooth enamel. Sticky and chewy sweets are the worst offenders as they cling to teeth for longer, giving those acids more time to do damage.
Top tip: Enjoy your treats as part of a meal rather than constantly grazing throughout the day. This reduces the number of acid attacks your teeth experience. And if you can, opt for dark chocolate over sticky sweets – it melts away more quickly and can even contain tooth-friendly antioxidants.
Festive Drinks and Alcohol
Mulled wine, prosecco, cocktails and even soft drinks can all take their toll on your teeth. Many are highly acidic, and over time, acid can erode enamel, making teeth more sensitive and prone to decay. Alcohol also causes dehydration, which reduces saliva flow. Saliva is your body’s natural defence against acid and bacteria, so when it’s lacking, your teeth are more vulnerable.
Top tip: Try alternating alcoholic drinks with water to stay hydrated and help wash away sugars and acids. If you enjoy something fizzy, drink through a straw to limit direct contact with your teeth – and resist the temptation to brush immediately afterwards, as enamel is softer after exposure to acid.
Grazing and Snacking – Timing Matters
It’s easy to nibble your way through December, especially at parties and gatherings where snacks seem endless. But frequent snacking means your mouth rarely gets a break from acid attacks.
Top tip: Stick to set mealtimes when possible and give your teeth a rest between eating. Rinsing with water after meals, or chewing sugar-free gum, helps neutralise acid and keeps your mouth feeling fresh.
Don’t Let Good Habits Slip
Late nights and busy schedules can make it tempting to skip brushing or flossing – but this is when your mouth needs the most care. Keeping to your routine helps prevent plaque build-up and keeps your breath fresh, even after those garlic-laden festive feasts!
Top tip: Brush twice a day for two minutes using fluoride toothpaste, and don’t rinse straight afterwards – just spit, to let the fluoride keep protecting your enamel. Floss or use interdental brushes daily to remove the food and plaque your toothbrush can’t reach.
A Fresh Start for the New Year
If your teeth feel a little neglected after the festive fun, January is the perfect time for a reset. A hygienist visit can remove any stubborn plaque or staining (mulled wine and coffee, we’re looking at you!) and leave your mouth feeling clean and healthy. Regular check-ups also help spot any early signs of decay before they turn into bigger problems.
Top tip: Book your new year dental visits now before appointments get snapped up!
